About Project

In 2014, the City of Rijeka joined the iUrban Remote Consumption Readout project implemented by nine partners from six European countries, funded from the FP7 EU program. The main project’s objective is to create and test new energy services in two European cities: Rijeka (Croatia) and Plovdiv (Bulgaria). Holosys, the largest Croatian device, and AMR (Automatic Meter Reading) support program manufacturer was entrusted with the supply of the required devices and IT systems, and their installation and integration.

Objective - creating energy management system

The project aims to improve energy efficiency. It was necessary to establish an energy management system to achieve this. Such a system would continuously monitor the consumption of energy and water and provide initial parameters for further improvement of the energy performance of buildings or the introduction of new technologies, to reduce energy consumption.

How we monitored the energy and water meters

To gain real-time insight into the consumption and production of energy, energy sources and water, and answer the basic questions when, where and how and why we spend energy, we needed to establish a complex infrastructure system that combined wired and wireless technology. Only the devices developed and produced by Holosys were used within the system:

Data collection modules (M-Bus PulseReader, Wireless M-Bus PulseReader)
Receivers and gateways (Wireless M-Bus Repeater WREP, Wireless M-Bus Receiver WR, and M-Bus Master M250GL)
data readout software system (software system to monitor the functionality of critical parameters of the AMR system, software system for energy management (EMIS)).

All the collected data could be viewed real-time on Holosys IT systems.

Monitoring of water and energy sources consumption in real time

The implementation of Holosys solutions resulted in the establishment of an energy management system that represents a platform for further optimization of the energy values of buildings. Also, the City of Rijeka can monitor the consumption of energy and water in real time and respond faster to infrastructure failures that result in increased consumption. This makes it possible to monitor costs efficiently.

Also, the implementation enabled compliance with the law, since all buildings, parts of buildings or building complexes with the total annual energy and water consumption costs equal to or over 300,000 kunas have to incorporate a remote consumption reading system at the energy and water measuring points. To centrally monitor the readings, they are also transmitted to the National Information System for Energy Management ISGE.

Implementing the Holosys Remote Energy Consumption Readout provided the City of Rijeka with a fully functional system. It is expected to eventually expand to other buildings and institutions not covered by this project. Architecture and scalability of the Holosys system certainly make it possible.
